If your birthday is in March before 21 March, your star sign is Pisces. From 21 March onwards it is Aries. The changeover can move by a day in some years, so for a birthday right on 21 March it's worth checking the year.
March zodiac sign dates
- Pisces: 19 February to 20 March
- Aries: 21 March to 19 April
Where the Sun really is in March
Until about 11 March the Sun is in Aquarius; from then until mid-April it is in Pisces. The first day of Aries, 21 March, is set by the spring equinox. The equinox point itself has drifted out of Aries and into Pisces over the last two thousand years.
The March gap between sign and constellation comes from the slow wobble of the Earth's axis. The zodiac signs and constellations guide explains why Pisces and Aries have drifted, and Ophiuchus is the one the signs leave out.
What is in the March evening sky
March evenings bring Leo well up in the south-east and Gemini high in the west, with the Plough almost overhead by late evening. Orion sinks into the west soon after dark, so March is the last month to catch it properly before spring.
Pisces and Aries in the sky
The brightest point of Pisces is Alrescha, and of Aries, Hamal. Both are drawn in the series of twelve Pisces constellation print and Aries constellation print, in near-black, gold and warm ivory.
Pisces and Aries belong to different elements: the zodiac elements guide sorts all twelve signs into fire, earth, air and water.
For a March birthday, a personalised star map charts the stars over the place someone was born, on the night itself, and the preview is free.
