About this print
Webb NIRCam near-infrared observations of the Cosmic Cliffs in NGC 3324, in the Carina region. Mapped colour within an original typographic layout.
The Cosmic Cliffs are the edge of a young star-forming region called NGC 3324, in the Carina Nebula, about 7,600 light years away. The "mountains" are walls of gas and dust being carved away by hot young stars just above the frame, and the tallest peaks are roughly seven light years high.
This print is built on the near-infrared image from the James Webb Space Telescope, released in July 2022 as one of its first full-colour pictures (NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI). Infrared light has no colour of its own, so the colours are mapped, which is how every Webb image is made.
It reads best large. At 50 x 70 cm the detail in the cliff face holds from across a room, and the warm gold and deep blue sit well with dark wood.
Webb's infrared camera sees through dust that hides much of this region in visible light, which is why its image shows newly forming stars that earlier telescopes could not.
NASA, ESA, CSA, and STScI. Image resized to fit; no photographic crop, retouch or recolouring.
