About this print
A black hole's accretion disc bent into a halo of fire - gravity made visible.
Light near a black hole is bent by its gravity, so the disc of hot gas around it appears to wrap over the top and under the bottom, forming a ring. The first real image of a black hole's shadow, of M87*, was published by the Event Horizon Telescope in 2019.
This print shows that bent halo of fire. It is dramatic and dark, best large and on its own wall.
M87*'s black hole is about 6.5 billion times the mass of the Sun, in a galaxy 55 million light years away. In 2022 the same team imaged the Milky Way's own black hole, Sagittarius A*, and the two shadows look strikingly alike.
