Deep space wants a deep surface
Canvas suits astronomy art better than almost any subject, the matte weave swallows glare and holds the near-black grounds of a nebula or a black hole without the cold sheen of glass. Each canvas is stretched on FSC-certified wooden bars and printed with pigment inks, made to order in the UK.
Sizes and prices
Four sizes, all stretched 2 cm deep over FSC-certified bars, all made to order in the UK with delivery included in the price. The measurement is the face you see on the wall.
- 30 × 40 cm — £51.49
- 40 × 50 cm — £59.00
- 50 × 70 cm — £89.00
- 60 × 80 cm — £99.00
60 × 80 cm is the largest canvas we make, and it is also the largest anything on the site except the 70 × 100 cm poster. If you want the canvas framed, that is a separate object with its own sizes and prices — see framed prints.
What the canvas actually is
The weave is printed with pigment inks, then wrapped round the bars so the picture continues over the edge rather than stopping at a white border. That wrap is why a canvas needs a little more of the image than a poster does, and it is why we check every uploaded photograph against the wrap before selling you a size. There is no glazing, so nothing reflects a window back at you, and nothing to smash.
Our art, or your photograph
Everything on this page is our original astronomy artwork. Want your own photograph on the same gallery-grade canvas? Photo to canvas measures your image against every size before you pay, so it won't print soft: or repaint it first as a watercolour, line drawing or painting with Cosmic Canvas. Prefer a frame? See framed prints.
Canvas is one of three finishes weighed up in On the wall. Canvas, framed print or poster sets out what each does to the same picture, and framed or bare canvas narrows it to this one decision.
