Our nearest great galaxy, M31, tilted in cold blue light - already falling toward us.
The Andromeda Galaxy, M31, is about 2.5 million light years away and is the most distant thing most people can see with the naked eye. From a dark UK site on an autumn night it is a faint smudge high in the east, off one corner of the Square of Pegasus.
It is moving towards the Milky Way and the two are expected to merge in several billion years. This print is drawn in cold blue light, tilted as the galaxy appears from Earth.
Andromeda holds roughly a trillion stars, more than the Milky Way, across a disc about 220,000 light years wide. In long-exposure photographs it spans about six full Moons. To find it yourself, look between September and December, when it is high in the evening sky.
