About this print
The Milky Way's heart as seen from a dark-sky desert: a river of a hundred billion suns.
The centre of the Milky Way lies in Sagittarius, about 26,000 light years away. From the UK it never climbs high: in summer it skims the southern horizon, which is why the brightest views come from places further south, like the desert in this picture.
A dark-sky desert under the galactic core. Mostly dark field, so it carries a large size comfortably without crowding a room.
At the very centre sits a black hole of about four million solar masses, Sagittarius A*, imaged by the Event Horizon Telescope in 2022. Dust between us and it hides the core from ordinary light, so astronomers study it in infrared and radio.
