About this print
The full Moon in loose watercolour wash, grey and silver pooling into the maria.
The dark patches on the full Moon are the maria, plains of dark volcanic rock that early astronomers took for seas. The brighter ground around them is older, higher and heavily cratered.
This watercolour lets the grey and silver pool into the maria in the way the eye sees them on a clear night. Soft and pale, it suits a bedroom and pairs with Lunar Phases.
The full Moon is the worst night to look for craters. With the Sun straight behind us there are no shadows, so the surface looks flat and bright; the best detail is along the line between light and dark at first and last quarter. A watercolour suits the full Moon for the same reason: it is about tone, not relief.
