About this print
Curtains of green and violet light over a black ridgeline - the solar wind made visible.
The aurora is caused by particles from the Sun hitting the upper atmosphere. Oxygen glows green at around 100 to 200 kilometres up and red higher still; nitrogen adds violet and blue. The strong storms of May and October 2024 put it over most of Britain, as far south as Cornwall.
Green and violet curtains hang over a dark ridge. It is the most colourful print in the range and works best where the wall around it is plain.
To the eye a weak aurora often looks grey or white; green is the colour cameras pick up most easily, and a phone on a long exposure shows colour the eye misses. In the UK the best chances come around the spring and autumn equinoxes, and from the north of Scotland.
